Public Virtual Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Introductory Course / 2425-3BCD7A15
Description
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define dyslexia and describe common characteristics.
- Explain the process of identifying appropriate students and placing them in the Wilson Reading System.
- Understand the principles of instruction: explicit, sequential and cumulative, engaging multiple learning modalities with multisensory techniques, repetition, and feedback.
- Create an optimal learning environment, prepare a lesson plan, and practice techniques.
- Understand the key components of instruction and presentation of lessons in three blocks:
- Block 1 – Word Study/Foundational Reading Skills: Lesson Plan Parts 1-5
- Phonemic Awareness, Decoding, Vocabulary, High Frequency Word Reading, Single-Word Accuracy/Automaticity, Phrasing/Prosody, Fluency and Comprehension at the Sentence Level
- Block 2 – Spelling/Foundational Writing Skills: Lesson Plan Parts 6-8
- Phoneme Segmentation, Encoding (Spelling), English Spelling Rules, High Frequency Word Spelling, Vocabulary, Concept Mark Up, Sentence-Level Punctuation and Proofreading
- Block 3 – Fluency/Comprehension: Lesson Plan Parts 9-10
- Vocabulary, Listening/Silent and Oral Reading Fluency and Comprehension, Narrative and Informational Text
- Block 1 – Word Study/Foundational Reading Skills: Lesson Plan Parts 1-5
Participants may enroll in the WRS Level I Certification Training or the online course WRS Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader (Steps 1-6) within five years of completing a WRS Introductory Course.

Wilson’s Virtual Instructor-Led Workshops
Wilson’s virtual professional learning offerings are taught by expert instructors who help teachers understand the foundation of the science of reading in which all of Wilson’s Structured Literacy programs are grounded. These workshops offer the high-quality experience that teachers expect from Wilson. Remote workshops offer enhanced features that promote interactive learning, including breakout sessions and other elements to address adult learning principles.
Participants of these workshops gain access to the corresponding program’s online learning community within Wilson Academy®. Here, they can explore video demonstrations, expert tips, and resources throughout the year.
Registration Information
- Pre-Event Registration: Registration with payment is required before the event and is processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Tuition Inclusions: Tuition includes access to training handouts.
- Confirmation Details: A confirmation email will be sent with event details.
- Attendance Requirement: This training will NOT be recorded. Participants must attend the live video conference event and complete a course assessment within a month to receive credit for successful completion.
- Refund Policy: Tuition is fully refundable with notification up to three days prior to the event date. Cancellations within three days prior to the event will result in credit toward future professional learning to be used within 12 months.
- Event Schedule: While every effort will be made to conduct professional learning events as scheduled, dates and locations are subject to change without prior notice. Wilson reserves the right to change or cancel a professional learning event due to low enrollment or factors beyond our control. Registrants will be notified to minimize inconvenience, but Wilson is not liable for any expenses incurred.
